No candy thrown at the parade.: New rule created by the 4th of July Committee banning the throwing of candy from vehicles and floats.Well another 4th of July in Newton Falls has come and gone. From what I've heard the parade and fireworks went off without a hitch. There were some new rules this year as far as the parade goes however.
1. No candy is to be thrown from moving vehicles/floats.
2. No squirt guns allowed.
Maybe I'm just a sucker for tradition (no pun intended) but something just seemed lacking driving through the parade and not seeing Tootsie Rolls and Suckers being thrown to the parade crowd. I agree that safety should always be everyone's #1 concern at an event like this, but it just seems a shame to enact this rule and put a damper on what we all think a community parade is all about. On another note, because the kids on these floats could not throw candy, they were told they could walk beside the vehicles and pass it out. I can speak from first hand experience that this was probably equally as unsafe, as now the kids are walking back to the float to re-up on their candy supply.
So what's the solution folks? Voice your opinion, or better yet make yourself available at one of the committee's meetings and speak your mind.
Is being shot with a squirt gun on the 4th of July by a 9 year old really the ruining of your day?
