Police Department Hiring New Top Dog

Police Department Hiring New Top Dog
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 - 5:56pm

New Chief WantedNew Chief WantedIt seems that city council has decided to force Chief Carlson out of his position a year early.

According to an article in the Trib. Council voted 3-2 to advertise for a new Chief Of Police. Apparently this vote will cut short his career by one year. Chief Carlson has served the City of Newton Falls for 34 years.

Apparently Council was ready to fire Carlson, and he beat them to the chase by telling them of his planned retirement.

Sounds to me like there is a back story to this, but I don't have the skinny.

Either way, Newton Falls has several positions within the department to fill now, including it's leader.

It seems like since the late 80's and early 90's, Newton Falls council has been trying to fire Chief Carlson. What has he done that is so bad that a town has spent 20 years trying to chase him out. I would think if he was really that bad he would have been removed years ago. I just don't understand the constant threat to fire him. It almost sounds more of a personal assault that what is best for the community. Now, I will admit I am an outsider now and I don't have all the information. However, this has been going on for years now. Council will hire someone else and they will either leave due to duress or they will be forced out. Quite similar, to the City Manager position. It is a joke that Newton Falls has to go through so many City Managers. There is a political problem in Newton Falls to cause so much instability. I am glad, however, that Newton Falls politics isn't on the front page news anymore because it was really embarassing. Let the boys basketball team be our headlines they will make us proud.
