CloggersCloggersThe Fun Time Cloggers is marking its 20th anniversary this year and will hold a fun dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Newton Falls Community Center, 52 E. Quarry St.

The Cloggers started in 1987 by Mickey and Tim Whaley who said they had no idea that they would still be dancing 20 years later.

The Whaleys said their membership ranges between age 8 and 83. The group has entertained at nursing homes, reunions, parties and picnics and at most of the area fairs including the Trumbull and Canfield fairs and Ohio State Fair where they have made several appearances.

Tim Whaley, the instructor, said in the past 20 years he has taught more than 300 people in classes.

‘‘This event will bring everyone together,’’ he said, indicating some of the older original members will try to attend.

Whaley said that when the group first started out the and his wife, Mickey, the director, never imagined it would last for 20 years but it did gain more and more interest. ‘‘We are all amazed,’’ he said.

Clogging is an American heritage type of percussive folk dance that originated in the Appalachian mountains which is associated with a number of different regions across the world.

Clogging is the official state dance of Kentucky and North Carolina.

Traditional Appalachian clogging is characterized by deep knee bends and a ‘‘drag-slide’’ motion of the foot across the floor. It is performed to bluegrass music. Modern competitive clogging, which is inspired by traditional styles, is often done in tap shoes or jingle taps. It is done to modern country or rock music and has less of the drag-slide motion. Hundreds of workshops and competitions in clogging are held every year.

Whaley said there is a rhythm to the clogging with a particular sound made by the shoes.

Event organizers are looking for members of the past or anyone who has taken lessons.

For more information call Sue Boles, coordinator of the local group, at 330-652-0380.

Cost for the dance is $5 for cloggers and $2 non cloggers. There will door prizes, 50-50 raffle and other planned surprises.
