NEWTON FALLS — With the start of a new year, the Newton Falls Community Center is planning to add a few more programs, including a teen game night and sock hop.
Bob Burke, community center director, said while many of the popular programs at the center from last year will continue there, this year there has been discussion on possibly adding Tae Kwon Do, tumbling classes and game nights
‘‘We are looking forward to 2008. Anyone who has ideas for new programs, we can offer to meet the needs of the residents is welcome to suggest them,’’ Burke said.
Mel Wilson, senior coordinator for senior programs, said that senior programs have proven to be well attended, with as many as 25 to 35 seniors showing up for line dancing, the Silver Sneakers exercise program and arthritis exercise classes.
‘‘Most of the senior programs are held in the morning. A senior lunch program is held every day,’’ he said.
Wilson said a flower arranging class by London House has proven to be very popular with seniors. He said London House may also offer art classes to those attending the center.
Wilson said passage of the countywide senior levy is what has made the senior programs possible.
For children, there is the indoor soccer program for 4- and 5-year-olds.
Burke said because of the popularity of the program, more sessions have been scheduled this year.
‘‘We had 50 kids last year. This year, we divided the kids into two sessions,’’ Burke said.
He said the sessions will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and two sessions starting at 10 a.m. Saturdays starting Jan. 15.
Burke said he plans to schedule dances and sock hops for teenagers on weekends starting in mid-January.
He also wants to begin a teen board game night, where local teenagers can bring chess and other board games to the center.
Burke said when he used to live in Wooster, there was a Memory Tree set up, with cardboard angels in memory of someone. He said anyone who comes to the center can place an angel on the tree in memory of a loved one who died that year or in a previous year.
Wilson said the community uses the center for weddings, receptions, parties and other events, and that the center is open for rental.
