Big second half carries LaBrae
Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 4:57pm |

LEAVITTSBURG — The LaBrae Vikings basketball team seemed in a hurry to get track season started in hosting Hubbard Tuesday night.

After scoring 31 points to lead by two points at halftime, the Vikings literally ran away and hid in the second half. LaBrae opened the third quarter with nine unanswered points on its way to a 50-point half in registering an 81-68 Trumbull Athletic Conference win.

‘‘We did what we needed to do in the second half,’’ LaBrae coach Chad Kiser said. ‘‘We played really well. It’s one of the better halves that we’ve played.

‘‘I thought they beat us down the floor and had a bunch of easy baskets (in the first half). At halftime we talked about not letting them beat us down the floor and getting in the paint for some easy ones.’’

REUNITE-Ohio program helps inmates, families
Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 4:53pm |

LEAVITTSBURG — Social worker Bonnie Rich says female inmates should have more than a little money and a bus ticket in their pocket when released from state prison.

Women who are preparing for release from prisons such as the Trumbull Correctional Institution here have “wants, desires and needs,” said Rich, of Hubbard.

Rich is a social worker with the Greater Youngstown Point on Wick Avenue in Youngstown. Among its social programs, the organization works to help male and female inmates both before and after they are released to have productive lives in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Bricks and plaques available for Legacy Wall
Submitted by Webmaster on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 2:11pm |

LEAVITTSBURG — When LaBrae’s new school was constructed, several individuals believed that a Legacy Wall should be built.

Community members and school representatives felt there were several reasons for this.

First, a fund-raiser would be needed to expand the athletic facilities, especially the track. Second, there were several individuals who wanted their names associated with LaBrae –– staff members, alumni, and community members. In some instances, the wall would serve as a memorial. Others felt that LaBrae was experiencing a new beginning, and they just wanted to show support.

Ex-administrator to oversee LaBrae busing
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 4:56pm |

LEAVITTSBURG — The LaBrae Board of Education hired former Administrator David Bowser to temporarily oversee the district’s transportation department.

The transportation issue appears to be the final push in a split school district that has found itself in the spotlight repeatedly within the last year.

Also, about 10 residents are circulating a petition requesting Superintendent Ronald Joseph’s resignation. The residents say they plan to present the signed petitions at February’s regularly scheduled board meeting.

The district came under scrutiny for a Dec. 13 decision to transport four parochial and charter school students in a cargo van without secured seats. The Ohio State Highway Patrol cited the district with two administrative code violations and is working with the Ohio Department of Education in its investigation.
